What an ATS actually does
An applicant tracking system (ATS) is software employers use to collect, organize, and filter job applications. When you apply online, your resume usually enters an ATS before a human ever sees it. The system parses your document into structured data — name, contact, work history, skills — so recruiters can search and filter candidates.
How ATS software reads resumes
Most ATS platforms extract text and try to identify sections by heading. Standard headings like "Experience," "Education," and "Skills" help the software categorize information correctly. Unusual section names, multi-column layouts, and embedded graphics can cause parsing errors — meaning your content ends up in the wrong field or gets dropped entirely.

- Use a single-column layout with a standard font
- Stick to common section headings
- Save as PDF or DOCX depending on what the employer accepts

Do keywords matter?
Yes — but not the way people think. An ATS may rank or filter by keywords that match the job description, so naturally relevant terms should appear in your resume. But keyword stuffing — listing dozens of skills in white text or cramming unrelated terms — can get your application filtered out and will always hurt you with the human who reads it next.
The human still matters
